**SICILY, ITALY** – Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily lifted a three-hour shelter-in-place order Wednesday morning after a suspicious package was investigated and determined to be harmless. The base went on lockdown around 8:35 a.m. local time after security forces were alerted to a possible vehicle-borne incendiary explosive device at an entry control point at 7:54 a.m.

The base initially reported an “ongoing situation” and secured all traffic in and out. Italian explosives disposal specialists, working with local police, responded and inspected the package, confirming it posed no threat. The all-clear was given at approximately 11:25 a.m.

Naval Air Station Sigonella, a significant base supporting numerous U.S. military commands (Navy, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force) and NATO operations, praised its security personnel for their swift response. The incident caused a temporary disruption to base operations, but normal activity has since resumed.
