Tue Feb 25 20:50:00 UTC 2025: ## J&K CM Abdullah Sparks Controversy Over Article 370 Remarks

**Srinagar, February 26, 2025** – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s comments on Article 370 have ignited a political firestorm. Abdullah stated that the article’s description as “temporary or transitional” stemmed from the incomplete formalization of J&K’s status upon its accession to India in 1947, linking it to the unfulfilled promise of a plebiscite. He emphasized the need to consider the Instrument of Accession’s conditions equally, arguing that the framework governing accession should not be treated differently than the accession itself.

His remarks, echoing a similar sentiment expressed by former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, have drawn sharp criticism. The Mirwaiz’s office denounced Abdullah’s explanation for the CRPF security provided to the Mirwaiz as “nonsensical” and “irresponsible.” PDP legislator Waheed-ur-Rehmaan Parra accused Abdullah of a complete U-turn, linking the current calm in Kashmir to repressive laws and actions rather than any genuine change. JKPC chairman Sajad Lone expressed concern that Abdullah’s comments increased the Mirwaiz’s vulnerability.

While Abdullah acknowledged a decline in separatist activity since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, opposition figures attributed the perceived calm to heavy-handed tactics by the government. The differing interpretations highlight the ongoing sensitivity surrounding the issue of Article 370 and its legacy in Jammu and Kashmir.
