Wed Feb 26 12:04:51 UTC 2025: ## Interfaith Couple Flees Jharkhand, Marries in Kerala Amidst “Love Jihad” Allegations

**ALAPPUZHA, Kerala –** A young interfaith couple, Mohammad Galib (30) and Asha Verma (27), from Jharkhand, have married in Kayamkulam, Kerala, after fleeing their home state due to alleged threats and accusations of “love jihad.” The couple, who have been in a relationship for over a decade, first married according to Islamic customs on February 11th and then again in a Hindu ceremony on February 16th.

According to their lawyer, Gaya S. Latha, the couple faced escalating opposition from Asha’s family and community after her family arranged a marriage for her with an older man. The situation worsened with allegations of “love jihad” and subsequent threats, forcing them to seek refuge in Kerala with the help of a mutual friend. They arrived earlier this month and reported receiving death threats and false police complaints in Jharkhand accusing Mohammad of kidnapping Asha.

The couple has since filed a writ petition in the Kerala High Court seeking police protection, fearing an “honour killing.” While the Kayamkulam Dy.SP has assured them of protection upon request, the incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by interfaith couples in India. The couple’s lawyer has also applied to officially register their marriage.
