WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced Monday it is eliminating more than 1,400 probationary workers in non-mission critical roles, resulting in annual savings exceeding $83 million. These cuts, affecting employees with less than one year in competitive service or two years in excepted service appointments, follow the elimination of over 1,000 other workers earlier this month.
VA Secretary Doug Collins stated that while these personnel decisions are difficult, they are necessary to reallocate resources towards improving healthcare, benefits, and services for veterans, their families, and caregivers. He assured that the changes will not negatively impact veteran care and pledged to announce plans in the coming weeks outlining how the saved funds will be reinvested.
The VA implemented a safeguard allowing senior leadership to request exemptions for dismissed employees to ensure the continued delivery of essential services. Secretary Collins emphasized the VA’s commitment to fulfilling its core mission by providing the best possible care and benefits to veterans.
