Wed Feb 26 07:52:31 UTC 2025: ## Chennai to Outsource Construction Waste Management Again

**Chennai, February 26, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will once again outsource the management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, citing insufficient infrastructure and manpower to handle the city’s growing waste volume. After resolving three years of payment and technical disputes with a previous contractor, the GCC approved micro implementation plans for all 15 zones.

The renewed contract will see the deployment of 47 new vehicles, including heavy-capacity tippers, skid steer loaders, and excavators, with an additional 24 tippers to be procured. January and February 2025 saw a significant increase in C&D waste collection, totaling 42,954.69 tonnes.

A new model for waste management will be implemented. Large-scale constructions will pay for waste transportation or transport it to designated dumping spots before transfer to Kodungaiyur or Perungudi landfills. Only large firms dumping near waterbodies will face fines. Recyclable materials like M-sand will be sold to factories. Smaller constructions can contact the GCC for waste removal.

The Commissioner, J. Kumaragurubaran, stated that the GCC is reviewing public feedback on draft guidelines. Zauba Technologies Private Limited will handle waste processing through its subsidiaries. A “tipping fee” will be charged based on the amount of waste delivered.

Local resident Raghukumar Choodamani suggested exploring on-site, small-scale recycling methods for greater efficiency. The GCC is expected to study this proposal given the city’s ongoing urban development and associated construction activity.
