**Allahabad, India** – BJP leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty has sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comments about the Maha Kumbh Mela, dismissing her claims as inaccurate. Chakraborty asserted that the attendance of 70 crore (700 million) people for the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam demonstrates the immense influence of Sanatana Dharma.
Banerjee had previously questioned the claim that the Maha Kumbh occurred after a 144-year interval, stating that the “punya snan” (holy dip) takes place annually. She also referred to the event as “Mrityu Kumbh” (Death Kumbh) following a deadly stampede, while expressing respect for the festival itself and highlighting concerns about the lack of adequate planning and preparedness. She specifically called for the Uttar Pradesh government to compensate the families of those who perished in the stampede.
Banerjee later clarified her statements, emphasizing that her concerns were about the event’s organization and planning, not the pilgrims themselves. She reiterated her call for compensation for the victims’ families. Chakraborty’s rebuttal, however, focused on the sheer scale of attendance, which he presented as evidence contradicting Banerjee’s criticisms.
