Tue Feb 25 20:13:43 UTC 2025: ## Delhi BJP Challenges AAP’s MCD Majority After Controversial House Session
**New Delhi, February 26, 2025** – The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Raja Iqbal Singh, has challenged Mayor Mahesh Khichi to prove the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s continued majority in the civic body. Singh alleges that AAP has lost its majority following several councillors’ defections to the BJP.
This challenge follows a highly contentious MCD House session on Tuesday, which lasted only three minutes and was conducted without the Opposition’s participation. Singh claims this was an unconstitutional manoeuvre, designed to avoid a vote count revealing AAP’s diminished numbers. He further alleges procedural irregularities, stating that the session was manipulated and lacked the required presence of the MCD Commissioner or authorized officials.
Singh’s accusations are supported by a letter to MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar detailing the alleged irregularities. The letter claims AAP councillors, along with the Mayor, rushed through the agenda before adjourning the session.
Despite these accusations, Mayor Khichi maintains that the session successfully passed proposals for a house tax waiver and the regularization of 12,000 contractual employees, claiming sufficient BJP councillors were present. The BJP, however, has called for a special House session on March 1st to definitively determine the ruling party’s majority. The political standoff continues to raise questions about the stability of the MCD’s governance.
