Tue Feb 25 18:22:10 UTC 2025: ## Manipur Sees Surge in Voluntary Weapon Surrenders Following Governor’s Appeal

**Imphal, Manipur –** A significant number of weapons and ammunition have been voluntarily surrendered across Manipur in response to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla’s appeal, authorities announced today. The initiative, which offers amnesty to those returning looted or illegally held arms, has seen strong public support.

On Tuesday alone, security forces in Imphal received a substantial cache including 12 CMG guns, 2 .303 Rifles, 2 SLR rifles, 4 SBBL rifles, numerous magazines, one IED, and over 70 rounds of ammunition. These weapons were subsequently displayed to the media. Similar surrenders have been reported across hill and valley districts, bringing the total to over 30 weapons and a large amount of ammunition since the initiative began. Authorities reported further surrenders in Churachandpur district as well.

The seven-day amnesty period, which began on February 20th, has two days remaining. While Chief Secretary PK Singh has asserted that action will be taken against those possessing illegal firearms after the deadline, the ongoing voluntary surrenders suggest widespread compliance with the Governor’s appeal.

The initiative comes amidst the ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which has claimed over 250 lives and displaced thousands since May 2023. The violence prompted the Centre to impose President’s rule in Manipur on February 13th, following Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation. The Manipur assembly is currently under suspended animation.
