**Salem, Tamil Nadu –** The Tamil Nadu government has disbursed ₹1,542 crore in compensation to farmers whose crops were damaged by natural calamities over the past four years, Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam announced Wednesday. The Minister made the announcement following a meeting with farmers in Salem to gather input for next month’s Agriculture Budget.
Panneerselvam highlighted the government’s swift response to farmers’ demands, citing the settlement of ₹5,542 crore in insurance claims without delays. He also noted the successful addressing of sugarcane farmers’ payment arrears. Of 1,991 demands submitted by farmers in previous meetings, 977 have been fulfilled through the last four Agriculture Budgets, the Minister stated, adding that farmers expressed confidence in the government’s responsiveness.
Farmers attending the meeting from across several districts expressed their desire for increased support in value-added products, training programs, and agricultural mechanization to boost profits. The meeting was attended by several ministers, officials, and representatives from farmers’ organizations.
