**CHENNAI, February 25, 2025** – Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai has achieved a remarkable milestone, performing 15 successful deceased-donor liver transplants since February 2023 with a 100% survival rate. This is a significant leap from zero such transplants just two years prior.
The hospital’s success is attributed to a 2022 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rela Hospital, which facilitated training for RGGGH’s surgical teams. The initiative also included establishing a dedicated operating theatre and intensive care unit (ICU) for liver transplants. Currently, 70% of organ retrieval is handled by RGGGH’s team, with the goal of complete independence in performing the procedures to train other government hospitals.
A multidisciplinary approach, involving daily post-transplant meetings with specialists from various departments, has contributed to the high success rate. This collaborative effort allows for prompt identification and management of potential complications.
The increased number of liver transplants at RGGGH has also led to a growing waiting list, reflecting improved public awareness of organ donation. The hospital is now one of only a few government institutions in the state performing this complex procedure.
