Tue Feb 25 03:10:00 UTC 2025: ## US Sides with Russia at UN, Sparking International Outrage

**United Nations, NY** – In a dramatic shift in foreign policy, the United States voted alongside Russia against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning the war in Ukraine, marking a significant departure from years of US support for Kyiv. The move, coinciding with the three-year anniversary of the full-scale invasion, placed the US at odds with its European allies and prompted widespread condemnation.

The US also voted with Russia on a separate, less condemnatory US-drafted resolution in the UN Security Council, which notably omitted any mention of Russia as the aggressor or acknowledgement of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. This resolution passed with 10 votes in favor, but five abstentions, highlighting the deep divisions within the Security Council.

The US’s actions follow President Trump’s increased engagement with Moscow regarding the conflict and intensified criticism of Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. This has led to urgent consultations between the US and its European partners, including a meeting between President Trump and French President Macron.

While the European-backed General Assembly resolution, condemning the Russian invasion and calling for a withdrawal of Russian troops, passed with 93 votes, the US abstention on its own resolution, following the addition of amendments strengthening the language against Russia, underscored the significant policy change.

European diplomats expressed deep concern. French Ambassador Nicolas de Rivière stated that rewarding aggression undermines peace and security, while UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward emphasized that a just peace requires acknowledging Russia’s aggression and respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty. She stressed that any lasting peace must be negotiated with Ukraine and cannot be imposed.

US officials defended their actions, portraying their resolutions as a path to peace. US Charge d’affaires Dorothy Shea called the Security Council resolution a crucial first step. However, the move has severely strained relations with key US allies and raised serious questions about the future of international cooperation on the Ukrainian conflict.
