Tue Feb 25 12:20:00 UTC 2025: ## NFL Considers Banning Controversial “Tush Push” Quarterback Sneak

**INDIANAPOLIS** – A proposal to ban the controversial “tush push” quarterback sneak is generating significant debate within the NFL. An unnamed team submitted the rule change proposal, confirmed by Troy Vincent, the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations, at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The tush push, a play where offensive linemen push the quarterback forward from behind, has become increasingly popular, particularly with the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills, who have utilized it with remarkable success. However, concerns about player safety have prompted the proposal.

Bills coach Sean McDermott, a member of the NFL’s competition committee, voiced his reservations, citing the inherent injury risk and the potentially unsafe techniques employed by some teams. While acknowledging the success of the play, he emphasized the need to prioritize player safety. He specifically pointed to the force generated by certain teams executing the maneuver as a major concern.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, whose team famously used the “Brotherly Shove” (their variation of the tush push) to score a touchdown in Super Bowl LVII, previously stated his desire to keep the play legal, highlighting the Eagles’ unique proficiency.

The proposal will be considered by NFL owners at their annual league meeting next month. A two-thirds majority vote is required for the rule change to pass. While the NFL and the competition committee have previously reviewed the play, this marks the first formal proposal to ban it. The league’s health and safety committee is currently reviewing injury data related to the tush push. The discussion around this controversial play is expected to continue throughout March.
