**KOCHI, February 25, 2025** – Congress councillor Malini Kurup was elected unopposed as chairperson of the Kochi Corporation’s Tax Appeal Standing Committee on Tuesday. The CPI(M) and BJP councillors abstained from the election, leading to the Congress securing the position previously held by the BJP.
The UDF celebrated the win with fireworks, alleging a secret pact between the CPI(M) and BJP. Their abstention, according to the UDF, stemmed from uncertainty regarding the vote of M.H.M. Asharaf, a recently co-opted member who had previously resigned from another committee after a dispute with the Mayor. Asharaf’s resignation followed bribery allegations against him and another committee chairperson.
The election was triggered by a no-confidence motion against the previous BJP chairperson, Priya Prasanth, passed by the Congress earlier this month. Several other committee reshuffles have taken place recently following resignations and allegations of impropriety.
