Tue Feb 25 01:56:18 UTC 2025: ## UN Security Council Adopts Neutral Resolution on Ukraine War Anniversary

**New York, February 25, 2025** – The United Nations Security Council passed a US-drafted resolution on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, marking a significant shift in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump. The resolution, adopted with 10 votes in favor and 5 abstentions, takes a neutral stance on the conflict, a departure from the previous administration’s strong support for Ukraine.

Russia, which holds veto power, voted in favor after failing to amend the resolution, which calls for a swift end to hostilities and lasting peace. While Russia’s ambassador acknowledged the resolution as a “starting point,” the neutral tone has raised concerns among Ukraine and its European allies.

The resolution, which simply mourns the loss of life and urges peace, contrasts sharply with previous UN General Assembly resolutions that strongly condemned Russia’s actions and affirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty. The US failed to pass a similar resolution in the General Assembly earlier in the day.

The UK and France, while supporting the goal of peace, expressed concern over the resolution’s lack of condemnation of Russia’s aggression and the potential for excluding Ukraine from peace negotiations. Ukraine itself voiced similar concerns, highlighting the fundamental right of all nations to exist free from aggression.

The General Assembly separately passed two resolutions on the conflict, one drafted by Ukraine and European nations, and an amended version of a US-drafted resolution, both of which affirmed support for Ukraine. This demonstrates a continued international consensus, at least outside the Security Council, against Russia’s actions. The differing approaches highlight the ongoing diplomatic struggle and the complexities of achieving a lasting peace in Ukraine.
