Tue Feb 25 13:59:47 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Cold Snap Kills Six Infants Amidst Humanitarian Crisis
**GAZA CITY, PALESTINE –** At least six Palestinian infants have died from hypothermia in the Gaza Strip due to a severe cold snap, according to medical officials. The deaths highlight a worsening humanitarian crisis exacerbated by Israel’s continued blockade of essential supplies, including temporary housing.
Dr. Saeed Salah, medical director of the Friends of the Patient Charitable Hospital, reported that three newborns died shortly after admission, while a 60-day-old baby froze to death in a tent. Two additional infant deaths were later confirmed, bringing the total to six. The hospital also treated eight cases of severe hypothermia in its nursery.
These deaths follow at least eight infant hypothermia deaths in Gaza in December alone, according to the United Nations, which reported 74 child deaths overall during the brutal winter conditions. The UN figures underscore the dire situation facing vulnerable populations in the besieged territory.
The Israeli blockade prevents the entry of thousands of mobile homes and other essential supplies, despite a ceasefire agreement stipulating their delivery. While Israel committed to providing 60,000 mobile homes and 200,000 tents, Hamas reports only tents have been delivered. Hamas condemned the infant deaths as a result of Israel’s “criminal” policies and called for international intervention.
The crisis in Gaza is compounded by escalating violence in the occupied West Bank. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 694 attacks on healthcare facilities in the West Bank between April and December 2024, with attacks sharply increasing in recent months. Israeli military operations have intensified, leading to the displacement of thousands and the destruction of homes in areas like Tulkarem and Jenin. In Jenin refugee camp alone, over 120 homes have been completely demolished. The WHO expressed deep concern about the escalating violence and its impact on healthcare access.
