Mon Feb 24 20:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Utah Utes Fire Head Coach Craig Smith After Less Than Four Seasons
**SALT LAKE CITY, UT —** The University of Utah announced Monday the dismissal of men’s basketball head coach Craig Smith, ending his nearly four-year tenure with the program. The decision comes after the Utes’ recent loss to UCF, leaving them with a 7-9 record in the Big 12 conference.
Athletic Director Mark Harlan cited a desire for greater success, including regular NCAA Tournament appearances, as the reason for the change. “While I want to thank Craig for his contributions and dedication, we have higher aspirations for our program,” Harlan stated. “We believe a change is needed to reach our goals.”
Assistant coach Josh Eilert will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The university has already initiated a national search for Smith’s permanent replacement, aiming to restore the program to national prominence.
Smith’s record at Utah stands at 65-62. Despite leading Utah State to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances before his arrival in Salt Lake City, he failed to achieve the same success with the Utes. The university will be responsible for the remaining payments on Smith’s six-year, $12.6 million contract.
