Tue Feb 25 12:30:54 UTC 2025: **Erode on High Alert After Andhra Pradesh Bird Flu Outbreak**

ERODE, INDIA (February 25, 2025) – Following a bird flu outbreak in Andhra Pradesh, the Erode district administration has implemented preventative measures to protect its poultry population. Fifty Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) are on standby to contain any potential spread of the avian influenza virus, primarily the H5N1 strain.

The virus, which affects chickens, ducks, and wild birds, spreads through infected carcasses, droppings, and contaminated water. Erode, with a significant poultry population—including 32.40 lakh commercial birds, 27.50 lakh layer birds, and 2.30 lakh country chickens—is taking proactive steps. Samples are being collected and sent to the Avian Disease Research Laboratory in Erode for testing. Surveillance has been intensified, particularly in areas with high poultry density and migratory bird habitats.

A high-level monitoring committee, chaired by the District Collector, will meet weekly to assess the situation. Awareness programs for poultry farmers are also underway. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant but avoid panic.
