Mon Feb 24 22:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Princeton Man Arrested for Murder of Brother, Cat

**Princeton, NJ** – A Princeton man, Matthew Hertgen (31), has been arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of his brother, Joseph Hertgen (26), according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. The incident occurred on February 22nd at the Michelle Mews Apartments complex.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting a fire and a deceased body. Upon arrival, they found Matthew Hertgen at the scene with his brother’s body, which displayed signs of blunt force trauma and lacerations. Joseph Hertgen was pronounced dead at the scene; an autopsy is pending.

In addition to the murder charge, Matthew Hertgen faces third- and fourth-degree weapons charges related to the alleged use of a golf club and knife, and an animal cruelty charge. Both brothers were former college soccer players.

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office is urging anyone with information to contact the Homicide Task Force. The investigation is ongoing.
