**Kannur, Kerala – February 24, 2025** – Peralassery grama panchayat in Kannur district has been declared a completely waste-free and green panchayat, marking a significant achievement in waste management and community participation. The announcement was made Monday by Kerala’s Local Self-Government Minister, M.B. Rajesh, who lauded the panchayat as a model for other local bodies.

Minister Rajesh highlighted the importance of collective action in maintaining cleanliness and urged officials to ensure 100% household participation in the Haritha Karma Sena waste collection program by March. Currently, the program covers 89% of households.

Panchayat president A.V. Sheeba attributed the success to increased public awareness and participation, resulting in a positive shift in attitudes towards waste management. The panchayat’s initiatives include a green school, art gallery, town, public spaces, and a green tourism declaration. A comprehensive green code of conduct has been implemented for public events, alongside regular cleaning drives, ward-level action plans, and strict anti-pollution measures. Social media campaigns played a key role in promoting source segregation.
