Mon Feb 24 20:57:40 UTC 2025: ## Doctors Without Borders Suspends Operations in Sudan’s Zamzam Camp Amidst Escalating Violence
**EL FASHER, North Darfur, Sudan (February 25, 2025)** – Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, announced today the suspension of all its operations in Zamzam camp, a sprawling displacement camp in Sudan’s North Darfur region, citing the escalating violence and extreme danger to its staff. The decision comes as fighting intensifies in and around the camp, home to an estimated 500,000 people displaced by Sudan’s ongoing civil war.
MSF, one of the few remaining humanitarian groups operating in Zamzam, stated that the increased attacks, including the recent RSF storming of the camp, made it impossible to provide safe and effective medical assistance. The organization’s field hospital, which has treated numerous patients with gunshot and shrapnel wounds this month, including wounded children, has been significantly impacted by the ongoing conflict. MSF reported the death of 11 people, including five children, due to a lack of necessary equipment. Ambulances have also been targeted.
Yahya Kalilah, MSF’s Sudan country director, described the decision to suspend operations as “heartbreaking,” emphasizing the immense humanitarian needs amidst widespread starvation. He highlighted the proximity of violence, difficulties in supplying the camp, challenges in deploying experienced staff, and concerns for the safety of MSF personnel and civilians as factors in the decision.
The suspension of MSF’s work leaves the vulnerable population of Zamzam camp further exposed in a region already facing a devastating humanitarian crisis. The UN has reported tens of thousands of deaths and over 14 million displaced due to the 22-month conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF’s recent move to form a parallel government further exacerbates the situation, prompting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to warn of a “further escalation” in the conflict. MSF’s urgent plea is for all armed actors in the area to prioritize the protection of civilians.
