WASHINGTON — Over 20 federal employees resigned Tuesday from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), protesting what they called a politically motivated purge of the federal workforce under President Donald Trump. The employees, citing a lack of expertise among Musk’s recruits, claimed the administration is dismantling critical public services. Their resignation follows President Trump’s endorsement of Musk’s demand that federal employees justify their positions by detailing recent accomplishments or face termination.
The mass resignation is not the only turmoil rocking the Trump administration. IRS Acting Commissioner Douglas O’Donnell is retiring after 40 years, following the recent departure of Commissioner Daniel Werfel and the layoff of approximately 7,000 probationary employees. Concerns remain over DOGE’s access to IRS taxpayer data, although the Treasury and White House have reportedly agreed to restrict access to sensitive information.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson faces an uphill battle passing a Republican budget blueprint featuring $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and $2 trillion in spending cuts. The plan faces opposition from Democrats and some Republicans, despite President Trump’s support.
Adding to the turmoil, Apple shareholders rejected a proposal urging the company to abandon its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, which are currently under attack by the Trump administration. Despite the conflicting signals, federal employees across the country returned to in-person work on Monday under a new return-to-office mandate, with some agencies reporting they were not fully prepared.
The Trump administration’s cost-cutting measures have also faced setbacks. The FDA, after initially firing probationary staffers, has begun rehiring some employees following pushback from lobbyists. Further, DOGE’s recent cancellation of 1,125 federal contracts has yielded minimal savings, with over one-third expected to result in no cost reductions.
Despite these challenges, President Trump defended Musk’s actions, claiming to have discovered “hundreds of billions of dollars in fraud,” a statement unsupported by evidence. The Office of Personnel Management, however, instructed agencies that compliance with Musk’s demand for employee justifications was voluntary. This conflicting messaging has created confusion among federal employees regarding their responses.
