Tue Feb 25 03:20:46 UTC 2025: ## US Sides with Russia in UN Vote on Ukraine, Amid Strained US-Ukraine Relations

**United Nations, NY** – In a surprising shift, the United States sided with Russia on a UN General Assembly resolution calling for a de-escalation and peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine. The resolution, which received 93 votes in favor, 65 abstentions, and 18 against, garnered significantly less support than previous resolutions on the conflict. While the resolution criticized Russia, the US vote marks a dramatic change from its previous consistent support for Ukraine.

The unexpected alignment comes amidst deteriorating relations between the US and Ukraine following comments from President Donald Trump. Trump has recently labeled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a dictator and urged a swift end to the war, even after talks between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia excluded Ukraine.

The UN resolution, proposed by Ukraine and its European allies, called for an early cessation of hostilities and a peaceful resolution in line with international law. Despite the US vote, Russia’s allies, including Belarus, North Korea, and Sudan, also supported the resolution. India abstained.

The US’s support for the resolution, which also manifested in a subsequent Security Council vote, has been attributed to the strained relationship between Washington and Kyiv following Trump’s return to the White House. The significant amount of US military aid provided to Ukraine since the war began, exceeding $60 billion, further highlights the complexity and unusual nature of the current diplomatic situation. The war, now in its third year, has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties on both sides, as well as significant civilian losses, according to various estimates.
