Tue Feb 25 02:20:58 UTC 2025: ## US Sides with Russia in UN Vote on Ukraine, Amid Strained US-Ukraine Relations
**United Nations, NY** – In a surprising shift, the United States sided with Russia on a UN General Assembly resolution calling for a de-escalation and peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine. The resolution, which garnered 93 votes in favor, 65 abstentions, and 18 against, received significantly less support than previous resolutions on the conflict. This marks a departure from the US’s previous consistent support for Ukraine in the UN.
The unexpected US vote coincides with deteriorating relations between the US and Ukraine following controversial statements from President Donald Trump. Trump has recently labeled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a dictator and called for a swift end to the war, even after talks between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia excluded Ukraine.
The resolution, while criticizing Russia, called for a de-escalation, cessation of hostilities, and a peaceful resolution in line with international law. Russia’s allies, including Belarus, North Korea, and Sudan, also voted in favor. India was among the numerous countries that abstained.
The US’s support for Russia extended to a subsequent Security Council vote. The shift in US policy has raised eyebrows, given the substantial military aid—over $60 billion—provided to Ukraine since the war began in February 2022. The conflict has resulted in devastating losses, with estimates ranging from 43,000 Ukrainian and 198,000 Russian military casualties, along with a UN estimate of approximately 12,500 civilian deaths. The anniversary of the war’s beginning further highlighted the ongoing human cost.
