Mon Feb 24 18:42:37 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Ceasefire in Jeopardy as Prisoner Release Delay Sparks Tensions

**GAZA CITY/JERUSALEM** – The fragile ceasefire in Gaza is teetering on the brink of collapse following Israel’s postponement of the release of 620 Palestinian prisoners, a key element of the agreement. Hamas has vehemently accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deliberately sabotaging the deal and vowed to halt further negotiations until the prisoners are freed.

Basem Naim, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, stated in an interview with Al Jazeera that the release of the 620 prisoners, scheduled for Saturday, was a prerequisite for continued talks. He accused Netanyahu of sending “strong messages” that he intends to return to war, claiming the delay is a deliberate act of sabotage.

Israel cited Hamas’s celebratory prisoner release ceremonies as humiliating to the families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza as the reason for the postponement. Netanyahu’s office stated the ceremonies constituted a “cynical exploitation” of the hostages for propaganda purposes.

The delay has cast doubt on the future of the ceasefire agreement, which includes a phased prisoner exchange. While mediators are urging both sides to continue negotiations towards the second phase, analysts are expressing skepticism. Meron Rapoport, an editor at the Israeli news outlet Local Call, suggested that Netanyahu may be seeking to reignite hostilities, although he predicted significant public opposition within Israel.

Hamas is still expected to release the bodies of four Israeli captives later this week as part of the initial agreement. However, Naim warned that all options remain on the table for Hamas, questioning the guarantees that future aspects of the agreement, including the release of the remaining 620 Palestinian prisoners, would be fulfilled by Israel. The situation remains highly volatile, with the future of the ceasefire hanging in the balance.
