PRINCETON, NJ – Joseph Hertgen, a former University of Michigan soccer player, was found dead in his Princeton apartment on Saturday, November 11, 2023, the victim of an alleged murder committed by his older brother, Matthew Hertgen. The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest and charges on Monday.
Joseph Hertgen, 26, played for the Wolverines from 2016 to 2019. His brother, Matthew, 31, has been charged with first-degree murder, weapons offenses, and animal cruelty after a cat in the apartment was also killed. Authorities believe a golf club and a knife were used in the attack.
Princeton police responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a fire and a death at the Michelle Mews Apartments. Upon arrival, they found Joseph Hertgen with blunt force trauma and lacerations. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Matthew Hertgen, who had placed the call, was taken into custody.
Both brothers were soccer players, having previously starred at Toms River North High School in New Jersey. Matthew Hertgen played soccer at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Princeton Police Department. First-degree murder in New Jersey carries a sentence of 30 years to life in prison.
