**Washington, D.C.** – A criminal investigation is underway into allegations that U.S. Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) assaulted a 27-year-old woman at his D.C. apartment. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed the active investigation, which also includes an internal review into why no arrest was made at the scene.
The alleged incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at a luxury apartment building in the Wharf area. Initial police reports, obtained by NBC4, indicate the woman reported being grabbed, shoved, and pushed out of the door by Mills, showing officers fresh bruises on her arm. The report also alleges Mills instructed the woman to lie about the origin of her bruises during a phone call with police.
However, the woman later recanted her statement, claiming the bruises resulted from a recent trip overseas. This recantation led to conflicting police reports, initially classifying the incident as a family disturbance, before being reclassified as an assault. The inconsistencies prompted MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau to launch an investigation into the officers’ handling of the situation.
Rep. Mills, through his office, vehemently denies any wrongdoing and expresses confidence that the investigation will clear his name. The alleged victim, who is not Mills’ wife, also stated in text messages that while the argument was emotionally charged, no physical abuse occurred.
Despite the alleged victim’s recantation, D.C. police have sent an arrest warrant to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which was returned for further investigation. Sources familiar with such cases suggest this back-and-forth is not unusual and may not lead to charges. Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed the internal investigation into police procedure, emphasizing the need to ensure all officers followed proper protocol. The U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. Rep. Mills’ office has not responded to further requests for comment.
