Mon Feb 24 06:41:07 UTC 2025: ## Bangladeshi Students to Launch Political Party After Ousting Prime Minister

**DHAKA, Bangladesh –** Students who spearheaded the protests that led to the ouster of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in December 2024 are set to form a new political party this week. The Students Against Discrimination (SAD) group, which organized the nationwide uprising, will launch the party, likely on Wednesday, according to two unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

The protests, initially focused on public sector job quotas, escalated into a widespread movement forcing Ms. Hasina to flee to India in August 2024. Over 1,000 people were killed during the unrest, with the UN human rights commission alleging serious human rights violations by Ms. Hasina’s government and security forces. Ms. Hasina denies these accusations.

Nahid Islam, a student leader and advisor to the interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is expected to lead the new party. Mr. Islam is anticipated to resign from his advisory role to focus on the new political venture. Mr. Yunus, who has stated he will not run for office, anticipates elections by the end of 2025.

Analysts believe the youth-led party could significantly impact Bangladesh’s political landscape, following months of intense political turmoil. The new party’s emergence represents a powerful shift in the country’s political dynamics, potentially reshaping the future of Bangladeshi politics.
