SHIMOGGA, KARNATAKA – February 25, 2025 – The Karnataka government distributed keys to 625 new affordable homes in Govindapura, Shivamogga, as part of the Ashraya housing scheme. Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan and School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa presided over the ceremony, allotting the homes through a lucky dip.

The 345 sq ft. one-bedroom flats, part of a larger 3,000-unit project costing ₹261 crore, were initially slated for completion in July 2023 but faced delays. The cost per house increased to ₹7.8 lakh due to these delays, and Minister Khan assured beneficiaries that the government would reimburse them for the additional cost. An additional ₹12 crore has been allocated to provide permanent power connections to the homes, currently operating on temporary supply.

Minister Bangarappa highlighted the scheme’s legacy, noting its inception under his father, former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa. Shivamogga MLA S.N. Channabasappa urged the government to expedite the completion and allocation of the remaining houses. The event was attended by several local officials and legislators.
