**New Delhi, India** – Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi have successfully performed a groundbreaking surgery on a 17-year-old boy born with four legs. The teenager, from Balia, Uttar Pradesh, had two extra legs attached to his stomach, a condition known as an incomplete parasitic twin. This is reportedly the first time such a procedure has been undertaken at AIIMS.
According to Dr. Asuri Krishna, additional professor in the surgery department, such cases are extremely rare, occurring in only one in 10 million births. The condition arises when twin embryos fail to fully develop, with one twin’s underdeveloped body attaching to the other. Globally, only around 42 similar cases have been documented.
The boy, who was brought to AIIMS on January 28th, experienced significant physical limitations due to the extra limbs, which hindered his growth and potentially threatened his internal organs. The condition also led to social ostracization, forcing him to leave school after reaching Class 8.
The successful surgery marks a significant medical achievement, offering the teenager a chance at a healthier and more fulfilling life free from the physical and emotional burdens he previously endured. The AIIMS surgical team hailed the operation as a triumph, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to advanced medical care.
