**Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu –** The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in Tamil Nadu has filed a corruption case against AIADMK MLA Amman K. Arjunan and his wife, A. Vijayalakshmi. The couple is accused of amassing assets worth ₹2,75,78,962, significantly exceeding their known income between May 21, 2016, and March 31, 2022.
The DVAC investigation revealed that Arjunan, representing Coimbatore North and previously Coimbatore South, acquired properties and assets disproportionate to his income, both in his name and in the names of family members, including his deceased son. A search of Arjunan’s residence was conducted as part of the investigation. The DVAC calculated the disproportionate assets at approximately 71.19 percent. Vijayalakshmi is implicated for allegedly aiding her husband in acquiring these assets.
Arjunan, formerly the AIADMK secretary for Coimbatore city and district units, declared assets worth ₹2,30,67,109 in his 2016 election affidavit. However, by March 31, 2022, his assets had reportedly increased to ₹5,96,70,908, while his and his family’s known income totaled ₹3,87,38,542.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami condemned the DVAC action, alleging it was politically motivated by the ruling DMK government. He described the case as a “knee-jerk reaction” aimed at hindering the AIADMK’s electoral prospects.
The case is currently before the Special Court for the trial of cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act in Coimbatore.
