Mon Feb 24 14:01:40 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu to Divert Surplus Water to Kangayam Reservoir

**Tiruppur, February 24, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department has finalized plans to divert surplus water from the Amaravathy Dam to the Vattamalaikarai Odai reservoir in Kangayam Taluk, fulfilling a key election promise of the ruling DMK party. The project, to be executed under the Pumping Scheme, involves constructing a link canal to carry the water.

Information and Publicity Minister M.P. Saminathan announced the project Sunday, following the release of water from the Vattamalaikarai Odai reservoir for irrigating 6,043 acres across several villages. This water release, the first phase of which lasted 11 days last month, will depend on the water level in the Thirumoorthy Dam.

The new canal will draw surplus water from a check dam on the Amaravathy River near Kambiliampatti village. This will alleviate the reservoir’s current reliance on the Thirumoorthy Dam, ensuring a more consistent water supply. The Vattamalaikarai Odai reservoir, built in 1979, has been dry for extended periods until recently. This project will allow farmers to cultivate a wider variety of crops, including gingelly, sunflower, groundnut, coconut, mango, drumstick, and tamarind, across its extensive canal network. The project aims to prevent surplus water from being wasted during monsoon season. Farmer organizations have welcomed the initiative.
