VIJAYAWADA, Andhra Pradesh – The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) is demanding official recognition as the Opposition party in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Despite not meeting the technical requirement of winning at least 10% of the seats, the party claims it is the “natural choice” for the position, citing its role as the primary opposition voice.

YSRCP leader and MLC Botcha Satyanarayana stated that the Assembly currently consists of a ruling coalition and the YSRCP, making them the de facto opposition. He criticized the government’s lack of response to their concerns, raised even during the Governor’s address, emphasizing the importance of a strong opposition in a functioning democracy.

Satyanarayana further alleged that the government only took action on farmers’ issues after YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy intervened, and that the coalition’s claims of addressing issues with the central government haven’t yielded significant results. He highlighted the party’s intention to raise crucial issues, such as the unfulfilled promises of the ruling coalition, that only an official opposition party can effectively address on behalf of the people. Former Minister Peddireddi Ramachandara Reddy was also present at the press conference. The YSRCP maintains that denying them official opposition status silences the voice of the people.
