Mon Feb 24 10:19:35 UTC 2025: ## UN Chief Condemns Global Human Rights Crisis

**Geneva, February 24, 2025** – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a stark warning to the Human Rights Council today, declaring that human rights are under severe attack globally. Speaking on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Mr. Guterres condemned the war and highlighted a broader trend of human rights erosion fueled by authoritarian regimes and profit-driven interests.

He cited the war in Ukraine, the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and instability in Haiti as key examples of the challenges facing the international community. Mr. Guterres specifically criticized those who view human rights as an obstacle to their pursuit of power and profit, including autocrats suppressing dissent and those exploiting artificial intelligence for malicious purposes. He also decried a morally bankrupt global financial system prioritizing profits over environmental protection.

The UN chief announced plans to propose new initiatives to the Security Council aimed at improving stability and security in Haiti, where a multinational security support mission is currently deployed. His address comes three weeks after the U.S. announced its withdrawal from the Human Rights Council, a decision made by the Trump administration. The current session of the council, which opened today, will continue until April 4.
