**New York, NY** – Transgender actress Hunter Schafer, known for her role in HBO’s *Euphoria*, has publicly denounced a new passport issued with a male gender marker, directly attributing it to a Trump-era executive order. The order, signed on President Trump’s first day in office, mandates that federal documents reflect sex based on “immutable biological characteristics,” recognizing only male and female.
Schafer, who transitioned as a teenager, revealed in a social media video that her replacement passport, obtained after her original was stolen, now displays an “M” for male. She emphasized that this bureaucratic change doesn’t alter her identity but creates additional hurdles, especially as she is scheduled to travel internationally next week.
“Because our president, you know, is a lot of talk, I was like, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it.’ And, today, I saw it,” Schafer stated in the video, holding up her passport. She added, “Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. I’m never gonna stop being trans. A letter and a passport can’t change that.”
The State Department, under the executive order, has stopped issuing passports with the “X” gender marker, introduced in 2021, and is refusing requests to change gender markers from “M” to “F” or vice-versa. This policy has prompted a lawsuit from seven individuals represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), claiming violation of privacy and First Amendment rights. The ACLU reports receiving over 1,500 contacts from transgender individuals and families facing similar passport issues. The controversy also sparked debate among panelists on Fox News’ *Hannity* program, discussing the matter alongside President Trump’s dispute with the Maine governor concerning transgender athletes in women’s sports.
