**CHENNAI, February 24, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has launched an investigation into allegations of corporal punishment at a private CBSE school in Chennai. A Class III student reportedly received physical discipline from his Hindi teacher for failing to recite a poem. The teacher allegedly slapped the child and removed his shirt buttons.

Following a complaint from the student’s parents, the school suspended the teacher and the principal was summoned to the department for questioning. A senior official stated that further action against the teacher will be determined following the inquiry.

The incident comes after the Madras High Court ordered the implementation of guidelines to eliminate corporal punishment in April 2024. The School Education Department subsequently mandated the creation of monitoring committees in schools to enforce these directives. The department also plans to implement awareness programs on eliminating corporal punishment at the start of the next academic year. School authorities have expressed regret over the incident.
