Mon Feb 24 06:57:29 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Launches 1,000 Subsidized Pharmacies

**Chennai, February 24, 2025** – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched 1,000 “Mudhalvar Marundhagams” (CM’s Pharmacies) today, aiming to provide affordable generic medicines across the state. The pharmacies, a key initiative first announced last Independence Day, offer discounts of up to 75% on medications.

Half of the pharmacies will be run by cooperative societies, while the other half will be managed by qualified entrepreneurs. This launch marks the first phase of the scheme, implemented by the Cooperation Department.

Chief Minister Stalin emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare and education, stating that the pharmacies are designed to alleviate the financial burden on citizens, particularly the poor and middle class. He highlighted the initiative’s implementation despite “financial crunch” and asserted the state’s dedication to the welfare of its people, irrespective of any central government restrictions.

Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam cited a 2020 STEPS survey indicating a high prevalence of blood pressure (30%) and diabetes (18%) among the 18-69 age group in Tamil Nadu. He emphasized the significant monthly expense of medications for these conditions, highlighting the pharmacies’ role in reducing this burden.

The event, held at the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai, was attended by several ministers and officials. Subsidies up to ₹3 lakh will be provided to pharmacists and cooperative societies to support the operation of these pharmacies.
