Mon Feb 24 09:18:45 UTC 2025: ## Hope Fades for Eight Trapped in Telangana Tunnel Collapse

**Nagarkurnool, Telangana –** A desperate race against time is underway to rescue eight workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel near the Srisailam dam in Telangana. Over 48 hours after the 44-km long tunnel partially caved in during repair work on Saturday, the chances of survival are dwindling, according to state minister Krishna Rao.

The collapse occurred approximately 13 km from the tunnel’s entrance, trapping four laborers and four employees of the construction company. While most workers escaped, these eight have been unreachable since the incident. Rescuers have reached within 100 meters of the trapped workers, but significant amounts of water and debris are severely hindering their progress. The accumulated muck has made navigation extremely difficult, requiring rescuers to utilize rubber tubes and wooden planks.

A massive rescue operation is underway, involving the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), state agencies, and Navy commandos. A team with experience in the 2023 Silkyara tunnel rescue in Uttarakhand has also joined the effort. However, Minister Rao expressed grave concerns, stating that the chances of survival are “very, very remote.” The unstable roof and continued shifting boulders further complicate the rescue.

Concerns have been raised about the need for additional equipment. Reports from before the collapse indicated cracks and water leaks within the tunnel walls, highlighting the need for de-watering equipment. Both the state and central governments are closely monitoring the situation. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi contacted Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to inquire about the rescue, while Prime Minister Modi has pledged full support. The Chief Minister’s office stated that efforts are underway to drain water and provide oxygen to the trapped workers, and rescuers are exploring alternative routes to reach them. The situation remains critical.
