Mon Feb 24 02:02:08 UTC 2025: ## Sudanese Military Gains Ground, Cholera Outbreak Spreads
**Cairo, February 24, 2025** – Sudan’s military has achieved significant gains against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, lifting a year-long siege on the strategic city of Obeid and reclaiming other key territories. This follows a September offensive aimed at retaking the Greater Khartoum area. The military now controls key areas, including its headquarters, and is nearing the recapture of the Republican Palace. The RSF has also lost control of Wad Medani and the country’s largest oil refinery. These victories have given the military a significant advantage in the nearly two-year-old conflict, despite ongoing international efforts to mediate a peace settlement. The RSF, meanwhile, has formed a parallel government, raising fears of further division within the country.
Simultaneously, a cholera outbreak is worsening in White Nile province. The disease, attributed to contaminated water following RSF attacks on water infrastructure, has killed 68 people in Kosti and Rabak between February 20th and 23rd. Over 1,860 others have been diagnosed, prompting a vaccination campaign that has reached 67% of its target population. The outbreak follows a previous cholera epidemic in Sudan last year, linked to displacement caused by the conflict. The ongoing war and cholera outbreak continue to devastate Sudan, with no immediate end in sight.
