Mon Feb 24 14:00:00 UTC 2025: **Panthers Release Veteran Linebacker Shaq Thompson**
CHARLOTTE, NC – The Carolina Panthers announced Friday they will not be re-signing veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson, allowing him to enter free agency. Thompson, 30, a first-round pick in 2015 and a team captain for five seasons, has been hampered by injuries over the past two years, limiting his playing time to just six games.
Despite his injury struggles, Thompson leaves a significant mark on the franchise, ranking fourth all-time in tackles with 752. General Manager Dan Morgan praised Thompson’s leadership and dedication, stating, “We appreciate Shaq’s leadership and dedication over the past 10 seasons…Always a source of passion and enthusiasm, he was committed to this organization on and off the field.”
This move comes as the Panthers overhaul their defense, also releasing cornerback Dane Jackson earlier this week and making changes to the coaching staff and player health and performance departments. The team is reportedly focusing on bolstering their defensive front seven, a position group that is particularly deep in this year’s NFL draft. The team has also made several other personnel moves, including re-signing veteran backup quarterback, long snapper, and kicker. The Panthers also invested heavily in their offensive line.
