Mon Feb 24 05:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Pope Francis Remains in Critical Condition, Battles Pneumonia and Kidney Issues

**Rome, Italy** – Pope Francis remains in critical condition at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic, where he has been hospitalized since February 14th, the Vatican announced on Sunday. While alert and responsive, and even attending Mass, the 88-year-old pontiff is battling pneumonia, a complex lung infection, and has developed early-stage kidney failure.

The Vatican reported that while the Pope has not experienced further respiratory crises since Saturday, he continues to require high levels of supplemental oxygen. Blood tests revealed the early kidney failure, described as “initial, mild,” and currently under control. However, doctors remain cautious, stating that the prognosis remains guarded due to the complexity of his condition and the time needed for medication to take effect.

News of the Pope’s precarious health prompted an outpouring of prayers globally. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York frankly acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating the faithful are united “at the bedside of a dying father,” although he expressed hope for the Pope’s recovery.

The Pope’s scheduled Sunday Mass and ordination of deacons were conducted by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, who offered prayers on Francis’ behalf. A prepared message from the Pope, expressing confidence in his treatment and requesting prayers, was read in his stead. This message also noted the upcoming anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

International expressions of support flooded in, including from Argentina, where the Pope’s native city illuminated its iconic obelisk with a message of prayer, and from Cairo’s Grand Imam, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb. The American Jewish Committee also offered their prayers. Children in Rome sent get-well cards to the hospital.

While the Vatican reports have not mentioned sepsis, doctors have previously warned it as a potential serious complication of the Pope’s pneumonia. The Pope also experienced a low platelet count and anemia, requiring a blood transfusion and hematin treatment, which doctors reported as beneficial.

Pope Francis’ pre-existing lung disease and age contribute to the seriousness of his condition, raising speculation about his future and the possibility of a resignation.
