Mon Feb 24 08:53:29 UTC 2025: ## Modi Calls for 10% Reduction in Cooking Oil Consumption to Combat Rising Obesity

**New Delhi, Feb 25, 2025** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a nationwide campaign urging citizens to reduce their cooking oil consumption by 10 percent to combat the escalating problem of obesity. During his Sunday radio address, “Mann Ki Baat,” Modi highlighted a doubling of obesity cases in recent years. He further amplified his message on X (formerly Twitter), nominating several individuals to spearhead awareness efforts and challenging them to each nominate ten more.

The Prime Minister’s appeal focuses on a simple, yet impactful, change: reducing monthly oil purchases by 10 percent. He emphasized that this small adjustment can significantly contribute to improving public health. Modi stressed that mindful eating habits are crucial for a healthier and disease-free future.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the health implications of excessive oil consumption. Dr. Vineet Kumar Surana, Consultant – Diabetes and Endocrinology at Manipal Hospital, explained that oils are calorie-dense, and overconsumption leads to weight gain and chronic inflammation, increasing the risk of heart disease and metabolic syndrome. Dr. Surana recommends a maximum monthly oil intake (including all dietary fats) of 600-700 ml, or approximately 20 ml per day.

To help individuals reduce their oil intake, the following tips were suggested:

* **Alternative cooking methods:** Opt for baking, grilling, or steaming instead of frying.
* **Portion control:** Measure oil instead of pouring directly from the bottle, or use an oil spray.
* **Healthier snacking:** Choose minimally processed foods and cook more meals from scratch.
* **Whole foods focus:** Incorporate more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes into the diet.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the link between excessive oil consumption and obesity, encouraging a nationwide shift towards healthier cooking and eating habits.
