**Mumbai, India** – Veteran Bollywood actor and director Rakesh Roshan has dismissed the notion that Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms will revolutionize the Hindi film industry permanently. Speaking at NDTV’s “India Through the Eyes of Its Icons” series, Roshan drew on his extensive career to argue that Bollywood has weathered numerous challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and will continue to adapt. He compared the current impact of OTT to the introduction of video technology, noting that it didn’t fundamentally alter the industry.
Roshan echoed the concerns of veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, identifying weak storytelling as Bollywood’s primary weakness. He emphasized the importance of comprehensive film packaging, a quality he feels is lacking in contemporary Hindi cinema. In contrast, he highlighted the South Indian film industry’s success in creating compelling, wholesome films, leveraging technology to maintain audience engagement.
Looking to the future, Roshan described the current state of filmmaking as transitional, predicting two potential paths: a complete evolution into a new cinematic style that might render current Bollywood films obsolete, or a return to the larger-than-life cinematic experiences that have become less prevalent in favor of more realistic narratives.
