Mon Feb 24 01:00:00 UTC 2025: **Nationwide Recall of Frozen Shakes Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak**

**Washington, D.C.** – A nationwide recall of Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial frozen supplemental meal shakes has been issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following a deadly listeria outbreak affecting 21 states. The outbreak, currently under investigation by the FDA and CDC, has sickened 38 people, resulting in 11 deaths and hospitalizations for all but one victim. Nearly 90% of those affected were residents of long-term care facilities or hospitalized before illness onset.

The recall encompasses all in-date Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial frozen supplemental shakes. The FDA initially identified 20 cases in 2024 and 2025 but current numbers reflect illnesses dating back to 2018, revealing an ongoing outbreak whose source previously eluded investigators.

Listeriosis, caused by the bacteria *Listeria monocytogenes*, is a serious condition, particularly for older adults, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms, which can appear weeks after consumption, include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal distress. Individuals experiencing such symptoms within two months of consuming the recalled shakes should seek immediate medical attention.

This is the second major foodborne illness recall of 2025. Last month, a recall was issued for Sweet Cream-brand mini pastries linked to a salmonella outbreak. While the FDA and CDC are actively investigating the listeria outbreak, the CDC has not updated its online tracking pages, prompting questions about their foodborne illness reporting procedures. The FDA is working to rehire hundreds of employees laid off in previous administrations.
