**Manila, Philippines** – Japan and the Philippines have agreed to significantly bolster their military cooperation in response to growing concerns over China’s assertive actions in the region. This was announced Monday following a two-day visit to the Philippines by Japanese Defence Minister Gen Nakatani.
Nakatani and Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. revealed plans to establish a “strategic dialogue” between their militaries and a “high-level framework” for defence equipment and technology collaboration. Both ministers emphasized the increasingly severe security environment and the need for enhanced cooperation to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The agreement comes amidst heightened tensions in the South China Sea. Both countries, which have mutual defence treaties with the United States, are strong critics of China’s claims to over 90 percent of the strategically important waterway. A 2016 international tribunal ruling deemed China’s claims invalid and a violation of international law, a decision Beijing continues to reject.
Recent incidents, including a reported near-miss between a Chinese navy helicopter and a Philippine surveillance aircraft over the disputed Scarborough Shoal, have further fueled concerns. While China accuses the Philippines of illegal intrusion, Manila alleges the Chinese actions endangered lives. The strengthened military cooperation between Japan and the Philippines is seen as a direct response to these escalating tensions and a demonstration of their shared commitment to upholding international law and regional stability.
