**RAMESWARAM, INDIA** – A Sri Lankan Tamil family of four arrived in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, on Monday, February 24, 2025, seeking refuge from the ongoing economic crisis in their homeland. The family, comprising a couple and their two young sons, were dropped off on a small islet near Rameswaram by a fiber boat.
The Indian Coast Guard swiftly responded, retrieving the family via hovercraft and transferring them to the Rameswaram Marine Police. Authorities identified the family as B. Kalaiselvan (37), B. Kirubana (33), B. Jibin (9), and B. Sharwin (5), all natives of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka. This is not the family’s first attempt at seeking refuge; they previously spent a short time in India at the Cheyyar Sri Lankan rehabilitation camp in Tiruvannamalai in 2019 before returning to Sri Lanka.
This latest arrival brings the total number of Sri Lankan Tamils who have reached Tamil Nadu since the economic crisis began to 320. The incident highlights the ongoing humanitarian implications of the economic turmoil in Sri Lanka and the continued influx of refugees into southern India.
