**Nagarkurnool, Telangana –** A section of a 44-km-long tunnel under construction for the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) irrigation project collapsed in Telangana on February 24th, trapping at least eight workers. The incident occurred while the workers were repairing a leak inside the tunnel, part of a project by the Jaypee Associated Group.
Rescue efforts are underway, with multiple teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state personnel on-site. A tunnel-boring machine is being deployed to aid the rescue. NDTV footage shows rescuers navigating the damaged tunnel, calling out the names of the trapped workers. A rescue team reached the end of the tunnel’s boring machine, but received no response. The final 2km stretch is flooded and filled with debris, hindering progress.
The collapse caused a significant blockage, with muck and water spread over 200-300 meters within the tunnel. A government report indicates an earth fracture is causing water ingress and that the tunnel roof is unstable due to shifting boulders. The internal communication system within the tunnel failed during the collapse.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy held a review meeting, demanding expedited rescue operations and support for the affected families. The situation is being closely monitored at both state and central levels. While several workers escaped the collapse, the eight trapped individuals remain the focus of the ongoing rescue mission.
