**Chennai, February 24, 2025** – A neglected subway in Chennai, leading to Mint Street, highlights a growing concern over urban infrastructure maintenance. Despite recent renovations by the Highways Department and Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the subway is plagued by garbage and is occupied by homeless individuals and intoxicated persons, posing a safety hazard to pedestrians. Responsibility for maintenance is disputed between the Highways Department and CMRL. However, a proposed police outpost at the nearby traffic junction is expected to address the issue of anti-social behaviour in the area.
Separately, concerns have been raised about the unsafe operation of aging, poorly maintained battery-powered vehicles used by Urbaser Sumeet, a conservancy company operating in Washermanpet. These vehicles, lacking headlights and with damaged tires and windshields, are driven recklessly, endangering both motorists and pedestrians. A local resident, R. Maheswaran, has voiced his apprehensions.
