**Graham, WA** – A 15-year-old boy died in a fireworks accident early Saturday morning, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) reported. The incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. on February 17th in the 21200 block of Orting Kapowsin Highway.
According to PCSO, a group of five teenage boys were using mortar-style fireworks on private property when the accident happened. One of the boys attempted to light a mortar firework while holding the tube close to his body. The firework exploded prematurely, resulting in fatal injuries.
Emergency responders confirmed the boy’s death at the scene. Detectives and forensic teams investigated, and all other boys present cooperated fully with law enforcement.
PCSO officials expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling the teen’s death “incomprehensible” and highlighting the devastating impact on the community. The Sheriff’s office used the tragedy to reiterate the serious dangers of fireworks and urged parents to speak with their children about firework safety. The investigation is ongoing.
