Sun Feb 23 03:10:00 UTC 2025: **CBS Makes History with New Daytime Soap Opera Centered on Black Family**

NEW YORK, February 20, 2025 – CBS is breaking new ground in daytime television with the premiere of “Beyond the Gates,” a new soap opera marking the first time in decades a Black family will be at the center of the narrative. The show, premiering this Monday, follows the lives of the affluent and politically connected Dupree family in a Maryland suburb.

“Beyond the Gates” is not only groundbreaking for its representation but also significant as the first new daytime soap opera to be greenlit in over 25 years. Veteran actress Tamara Tunie, who starred in “As the World Turns” and appears in the new series, explained her decision to return to the soap opera genre: “The only thing that would bring me back is this show because of its historic nature… the African American family being the central family… which has never happened.” She highlighted the show’s depiction of a loving, supportive, and multicultural family, featuring diverse representation both on and off screen.

Tunie praised the inclusive environment behind the scenes, a stark contrast to her past experiences in television. Fellow cast member Daphnée Duplai emphasized the show’s normalization of Black excellence, stating that “Black excellence is… our service people, our community leaders, it’s our caregivers.”

While focusing on the Dupree family, “Beyond the Gates” promises to deliver universal themes and storylines, according to Tunie, encompassing “secrets and lies, all the good human stuff.” The show is poised to redefine the landscape of daytime television with its compelling narrative and landmark representation.
