Chicago, IL – The Chicago Bears have released veteran defensive end DeMarcus Walker, freeing up over $10 million in salary cap space, NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo reported. The move, which also includes the release of tight end Gerald Everett, comes as the Bears look to improve their financial flexibility ahead of the opening of free agency.

Walker, 30, started all 17 games for the Bears in 2022 but recorded relatively modest statistics: 47 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 16 quarterback hits. He was scheduled to earn a base salary of $5.2 million in 2023, with a total cap hit of $5.916 million. Walker originally signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Bears in 2023, including $15.65 million in guaranteed money.

A second-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos in 2017, Walker played four seasons in Denver before stops in Houston and Tennessee. He now enters free agency for the second time in as many years.
